Sean & Stefen discuss the Isles standing pat at the deadline, what happened around the NHL, and NYI finding their stride under Patrick Roy as they try to continue their winning ways!
3:00 – Sean and Stefen start with the Islanders taking on the St. Louis Blues. They went down 2-0 on two uncharacteristic turnovers by Bo Horvat. Horvat credited his teammates for tying the game up (Kyle Palmieri and JG Pageau scored), and then he scored the game-winner early into the third period. The Islanders showed resilience and desperation, needing points to get into the playoffs.
5:30 – The Islanders took on the Sharks in a late game on the West Coast. They completely dominated the Sharks and had an answer for every Sharks goal. They also have notably taken accountability for mistakes, something that was not noted when Lane Lambert was the coach. The accountability has led to a different energy and confidence surrounding this group.
“It’s not a coincidence that they’re winning now. They bought in physically into what Roy wants on the ice, mentally they bought into never giving up but also they’re going to win and lose as a team and they’re going to pick each other up. This team has never seemed closer to me than they are right now.”
– Stefen Rosner on Patrick Roy’s message that this Islanders team has bought into
8:30 – Sean asks Stefen about how this team has bought into Patrick Roy’s system. Early on, we could see what he wanted out of his team, but we failed to see the execution. Now, with weeks of practice and time to adjust, this Islanders team is executing Roy’s system and finding wins because of it. The Islanders are focusing less on their opponent and more on their own game, knowing that if they execute their game, they can beat anyone.
12:20 – Sean asks Stefen about Ilya Sorokin, and if there has been any difference in his game since Roy took over. Stefen points out that he has started to play the puck much more, allowing the defense to pick it up in stride.
15:30 – Sean and Stefen move on to the trade deadline, and discuss Lou Lamoriello not doing anything. Stefen says it made sense to add something, but because of the prices and assets available, it did not make sense.
20:00 – Sean and Stefen point out that there were no extensions announced at the trade deadline. Mike Reilly was not extended yet, but it will likely be done. Cal Clutterbuck and Matt Martin likely won’t be signing elsewhere, so there’s no rush. Since Kyle MacLean was on the roster at the deadline, he is ineligible to play in the AHL again this season.
22:30 – The boys discuss what else went on at the trade deadline around the NHL.
33:30 – What’s on Tap!
Stefen breaks down the Islanders Sunday night matchup against the Anaheim Ducks and the following night against the LA Kings.
42:30 – Hero of the Week!
Stefen’s pick: JG Pageau
Sean’s pick: Stefen (!) and Bo Horvat
47:00 – Jake talks about how standing pat was the right decision for this group under Patrick Roy.
