Summer is coming to an end which means another exciting season of New York Islanders Hockey is on the horizon. Sean Cuthbert and Stefen Rosner are back for the first episode of the season and review the team’s summer and preview their upcoming season with a little help from Brian Compton!
1:45 — Experience Points! presented by Main Street Board Game Café
2:10 — Housekeeping. Stefen Rosner sheds some light on the situation regarding Ilya Sorokin’s supposed injury and how that would impact his ability to start the season.
3:50 — The boys break down training camp and discuss who will be in attendance. The Identity Line is looking more certain to be broken up as Matt Martin will be joining training camp, but on a professional tryout and Cal Clutterbuck will not be returning as his time with the team has reportedly concluded. Also on PTOs with the Islanders, are KHL defensemen, Artyom Kudashov, and veteran goaltender Keith Kinkaid.
4:40 — How did the New York Islanders do this off-season? Stefen Rosner answers that question by explaining that for a team with a restrictive cap situation, the team performed admirably by making some key additions specifically in European #1 free-agent, Maxim Tsyplakov. Stefen further elaborates on his performance during rookie camp, his potential upside in his speed and “elite shot,” as well as the process of getting him signed to the NHL overall.
There's no question that #Isles prospect Matthew Maggio improved his release this summer.
— Stefen Rosner (@stefen_rosner) September 17, 2024
Spoke to him about that today, with Bridgeport HC Rick Kowalsky weighing on why that improved release is important for Maggio, given his size @TheHockeyNews https://t.co/1Pefi0Nfkb
Is Matthew Maggio climbing the Islanders prospect depth chart?
8:15 — Stefen provides additional information regarding Oliver Wahlstrom and his status in the NHL. Wahlstrom is currently fighting for the only right-wing position available and could be considered competing with Matt Martin for that lone spot. It was further elaborated upon that there is a very good chance that he is traded or cut and is offered a spot on another team in the league.
9:15 — Rosner gives the Islanders 45 experience points for their offseason and further elaborates on the significance of re-signing waiver-claimed defenseman Mike Reilly. Sean Cuthbert follows up with 52 experience points for re-signing Mike Reilly and signing Maxim Tsyplakov. We’re still figuring out what these points mean exactly, but we’re going to just roll with it…
12:00 — On The Line: Brian Compton, NHL.com
Brian Compton and the boys talk about the off-season. They touch on the additions of Duclair and Tsyplakov, an Ilya Sorokin bounce back, a Patrick Roy training camp, the Eastern Conference outlook, and Matt Martin’s future.
26:00 — Big thanks to Brian Compton for joining the program, Sean and Stefen talk about the Off-season developments across the Metropolitan Division. Stefen even stated, “I think this is the weakest the Metro has been…. This division is wide open. Could the Islanders finish second? They could finish first! (28:15)” The Metro this year is definitely the most open it’s ever been for the Islanders.
30:20 — Stefen touches on his chats with rookie, Marshall Warren, and veteran goaltender Keith Kinkaid on their experiences being die-hard Islanders fans growing up and finally getting to play for their childhood dream team.
“For a team that’s lacking cap space, I think they did alright.”
-Stefen Rosner on the Islanders off-season
33:00 — What’s on Tap! presented by Centre Station Bar & Grill
The Islanders are getting ready to host day one of training camp Thursday (9/19/24) as well as the NHL preseason beginning next week, where the Isles will be playing the New Jersey Devils on the 21st. The Utah Hockey Club will be in town on October 10th to kick off the 2024-2025 NHL season for the Islanders. The boys touch on the new kids on
the block in the Utah Hockey Club and how they fair compared to their predecessors in the Arizona Coyotes. The guys wrap up the segment by talking about the prospects and who might be the next man up.
48:40 — Hero of the Week!
Sean’s Pick: Matt Martin
Stefen’s Pick: Captain Anders Lee
51:25 — Welcome to the Snake Den! Jake “The Snake” Radonis offers some predictions for the upcoming season where he proposes that the Islanders will finish second in the Metro with 96 points among other interesting takes.
59:00 — Questions Brewin’!
Isles fans ask their questions to the guys below:
1:00:23 — Without Clutterbuck and Martin, do you worry about the “toughness” of this team?
1:03:45 — For the guys on PTO, how do we pick one up if we are over on the cap space?
1:04:32 — Where does Wahlstrom fit with this team? It seems that Tsyplakov is a better version of Wahlstrom.
1:06:08—With Mayfield back on the PK, it should improve it, but who steps in to replace Cal?
1:08:00 — No big moves just like last summer (Duclair ain’t big) & Sorokin being shaky will lead to the same 1st round exit if they make it – agree?
1:10:44 — Do you think that the Gotham Sports network will be a positive change for the Islanders broadcasts?
1:12:52 — Which prospect, (if any) has a legitimate shot to make the team?
1:13:28 — Do you see Clutterbuck joining the Islanders coaching staff at some point?
1:35:00 — Was Martin hurt last year? What trade would be made to sign 17 to get him under the cap? He won’t go to Bridgeport will he?
